Awkward Black Girl Moment

I stopped going out for a while because I kept having these awkward run-ins with old flames, people I should have but didn't recognize, and friends of ex's that I'd stopped talking to after the breakup. Against my better judgement, I attempted to go out last night. No sooner did I step outside the door to head back to my car after said outing, did I run into an old acquaintance from high school. He politely introduced me to his girlfriend and we began catching up while she and her friends made final arrangements near the car.

Out of pure, drunken courtesy, he invited me to accompany them to a nearby watering hole to which I am rather familiar and out of pure, sober courtesy, I agreed to accompany them for "one drink".

No sooner was I invited, I was quickly uninvited. Seems as though having a drink with an old male acquaintance, his girlfriend and her friends is rather taboo when one of her girlfriends just happens to be your fiance's ex-girlfriend. Who knew?

I politely excused myself and headed back to my car with a grin on my face and a thought in my head: "this is why I don't go out anymore." Stupid me! Who was I to think that the population of Chicago had grown by leaps and bounds since the last time I went out; so much so that there was not a snowball's chance in Hell of me running into a friend, of a friend, of a friend who's ex-boyfriend just happens to be my fiance?

I'll simply take this as more motivation to rid myself of the plagues of this city (i.e. corruption, chronic obesity, cold weather, unnecessary drama) and move to a warmer locale.
